Cross-cutting Themes
Llanwern High School has been recognised by the Welsh Government for its whole-school approach to promoting and celebrating the contributions of Black, Asian and minority ethnic people across the curriculum and won the very first Betty Campbell MBE Award for pioneering work in this area. To support the curriculum, we have identified a cross-curricular Diversity theme every half-term. Each theme has a high-profile competition, is supported by form and subject area resources, and culminates in an event or exhibition and a reward experience for winning participants.
The themes are:
- B.A.M.E. History and Heroes and Legends@Llanwern
- Cultural Celebrations
- Freedom
- Cynefin
- Celebrating Differences
- Migration
The curriculum in years 10 and 11 gives pupils choices for KS4 studies but within an overall framework that ensures they enjoy a broad and balanced education including the Welsh Baccalaureate. All pupils follow a common core of subjects and supplement this with option choices. A structured guidance programme ensures that option choices meet the needs of the individual students as far as possible.
In years 10 and 11 pupils follow a core curriculum of GCSE's (or equivalent) in English Literature and Language, Mathematics, Numeracy, Science, Full Course Religious Studies or Equality and Diversity qualification, Welsh along with core PE (non-examined). Pupils have the opportunity to choose from a range of subjects dependent on availability / validity as as according to Qualifications in Wales information. Pupils are guided in Year 9 to select options.
